Opportunities and risks of social factors influencing the privacy decisions of adolescents
Digital technologies are increasingly shaping our everyday lives: Many social situations and interactions today are hybrid - they have both physical and virtual components.
This brings opportunities, but also risks, especially for the informational self-determination of those involved.
For example, smart speakers can listen in on physical encounters or photos of these encounters are immediately shared in messenger groups - often without the knowledge or consent of those involved.
Furthermore, social pressure can influence how people decide about their own privacy. This poses a particular challenge for adolescents and young adults (aged 16 to 25), as they are caught between the desire for autonomy and the need to belong to a peer group.
